Age Connects North East Wales supports older people in the communities of Flintshire and Wrexham by offering the following services:

  • Advocacy services across both counties, providing specialist advocacy support to older people.
  • Wellcheck provides short-term, low-level support to older people in Flintshire, who are going through, or have recently experienced, life changes making them vulnerable and/or socially isolated.
  • Home Solutions is a chargeable service, designed to promote better access to a full range of services for older people in Flintshire including cleaning, handy person and assisted shopping.
  • Advantage Age is a financial services programme that assists in accessing travel insurance, funeral plans and other essential products for older people.

Our chargeable services enable us to sustain all our other services and as a not-for-profit organisation, any surplus we make is directed back into the Charity to better assist the older people of Wrexham and Flintshire. Information provision on a wide range of issues to people across the area via the telephone, through information drop in sessions and other promotional events. Befriending – the project matches volunteers with socially isolated older people to help them to join in social activity within their local areas.  This also offers telephone befriending where our own volunteers call people at their home to prevent isolation. Wrexham Options is similar to Wellcheck, offering supported information and advice to older people in Wrexham.

We can also assist people with advice regarding benefits as part of our Wellcheck and Options programmes.  We provide a Wellcheck service which offers holistic support to service users.  We are able to help with income maximisation, help with making claims and form filling, including help with Disability Living Allowance and Attendance Allowance forms, pension credit, housing benefit and council tax benenfit.

Winter Specific Service Provision:

Wellcheck:  This service runs all year and is particularly important during the winter months, when older people are most vulnerable.  It is a vital service that allows older people to remain independent in their own homes during winter, when they may not feel confident to do so otherwise.

Wellcheck ensures that older people are prepared for the winter as much as is possible.  This is done through income maximisation, which ensures that older people are receiving all the benefits they are entitled to.  Maximising the income of an older person will help them to be able to afford to have their heat on for longer; afford to stock up on food in case of emergencies, as well as to buy other winter specific items that they otherwise might struggle to fund.

Our Wellcheck advisers can also help to give energy and heating advice to clients to ensure they are getting the best deal.

Home Solutions:  Although Home Solutions runs all year, this chargeable service is particularly important during the winter months.  It allows ACNEW to have face-to-face contact with clients during what can be a very isolating time for older people.

Through assisted shopping, Age Connects ensures that it’s clients have sufficient stocks of food, which is important during winter in case of adverse weather.  Not only this, but by helping clients to and from hospital or leisure appointments, we are ensuring that clients remain active within the community at a time when they may not wish to, or be able to get out due to bad weather.

Shop and Drop:  This service runs all year; a person can have it on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis.  To help someone over the winter, a person would need to join the scheme in advance, and then they would be guaranteed to receive their groceries across the winter even in extreme weather conditions.

I.C.A.N!:  Winter can be very isolating for older people, particularly if the weather is bad.  I.C.A.N! activity sessions offer a chance for older people to socialise with others at a time when they may not have much contact with other people.  It is also a chance for people to have a hot meal, something we often take for granted!

We also offer transport that will pick up those who wish to come to a session.  This is vital during the winter to ensure that people feel able to come to the sessions.

Social Inclusion:  This is particularly important during the winter months, when getting out of the house is made difficult by bad weather.  Through social inclusion projects, ACNEW aims to lessen the impact of winter on those older people who are most vulnerable.  This is done through home visits by volunteers, group activities such as lunch clubs and craft making sessions, as well as helping older people access services that they otherwise would not be able to during the winter.
